University Admissions Talk to Year 12, Thursday 10 March 2016

26 February 2016

Dear Parents

University Admissions Talk to Year 12 students and their parents, Thursday 10 March, 7pm

I am delighted to offer you the opportunity to hear the latest advice on UCAS applications and the current Higher Education landscape, delivered by a highly respected expert in this field, Mike Nicholson, Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions, University of Bath.

Mike joined the University of Bath in October 2014, having previously worked as Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach at the University of Oxford (2006-2014) and Head of Undergraduate Admissions and Student Recruitment at the University of Essex (1998-2006). Most of his career has involved work in admissions, access and student recruitment, although he initially worked in faculty administration and student services at the University of Newcastle in the early 1990’s.

Mike heads the team responsible for managing student admissions, student recruitment (UK and Europe) and funding guidance, access and widening participation, and learning partnerships.

In addition to his role at Bath, Mike is currently UK Chair of the Higher Education Liaison Officers’ Association, a membership body providing training and support for those responsible for outreach work in UK Higher Education. He is a member of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) Council, is on the OCR Qualifications Group, represented English universities on the Welsh Qualifications Reform stakeholder group, was on the SPA National Expert Think Tank considering Qualifications Reform in 2015, and works in an advisory capacity with a number of educational charities seeking to improve access to higher education for under-represented students. He is a member of the Social Mobility Advisory Group established in 2016 to advise Government on the Higher Education Bill, and will soon commence a three year period as a member of the AQA Council. He is also one of the University representatives on the Bath Education Trust, which supports state secondary education providers in Bath and North East Somerset.

Mike graduated in 1990 from the University of Sheffield with a degree in English and History. He also attended Allegheny College, Pennsylvania for a year as an exchange student.

The talk will take place in the Main Hall, Thursday 10 March, commencing promptly at 7pm, and will last for around an hour.

The school will be busy that night as we also have Year 9 parents’ evening in the Study Centre. For that reason, you may find it beneficial to arrive on foot. If you do drive, the over flow car park will be open; please proceed through the green gates into E / D block playground.

In order to help with our planning, I would be grateful if you could please indicate on the reply slip below how many of you will be attending, and return this to Mrs Thompson, Sixth Form Administrator, by Friday 4 March. I am expecting this event to be popular; in the first instance, due to capacity within the Hall, we are limiting places to two per student. If we are able to offer more nearer the time, I will let you know by e-mail.

Having been privileged to hear Mike speak for many years, I know that you will enjoy an informative evening delivered in Mike’s own inimitable style. I am looking forward to listening to what he has to say and hope that you will be able to join us on the night. In the event that you are unable to attend yourself, your son / daughter is very welcome to attend on their own and I would encourage them to do so.

Yours sincerely

Sue Haines
Head of Sixth Form
