Year 8 County Cup v Wrenn – 14th October 2008
Year 8 put up a determined fight against Wrenn who were well drilled and contained some players who would not look out of place in a year 10 team. The boy’s defended very well in the second half and only let in 2 tries. R Cohen and T Yarde tackled well in the backs – being 2 of the smaller players but having the biggest hearts. G Lawrence scrapped for every ball and won many mauls whilst A Nimmo took the ball forward well. The forwards scrummaged well. A promising performance, however the forwards need work on taking the game to the opposition at speed. Well done to all players involved.
Player of the Match – G Lawrence and A Nimmo
Year 9 Rugby County Cup v Sponne – 13th October 2008
The team have been devastated by long term injuries, so it was good that they managed to put 15 players on the pitch. Unfortunately the majority of the Sponne side play for the same team at Towcestrians every Sunday, so they were able to play a flowing attack style of game. CCS were on the back foot most of the time but tackled well this week, with R Clifton and W Greenwood putting a high tackle rate. It was good to give new players to rugby some game experience and I hope that they are not put off from the game.
Year 10 Rugby County Cup v Kingsbrooke – 16th October 2008
The team played some exceptional rugby with excellent support at times and an open style gamey, at times it was real end to end stuff. The opposition scored in the first few minutes; however CCS hit back with an excellent try from C Malone who ran around the backline defence to touch down. Some excellent ruck play from CCS earned a scrum, and J Emmett moving into the backs, broke the gain line with a great run and nearly touched down, only for the defender to tackle him into the posts. With the posts still shaking, J Osbourne quickly picked up and dived over for a try. In the second half more attacking rugby saw B Brumpton have an influential role and score. Followed by a powerful run and try for J Hopwood, C Malone converted one of the tries to make it 15 – 22. The whole team played well, however some forwards again need to work on getting to the breakdown. The players were happy to win a game at last, however it was encouraging that there were 19 players to select from and a good turn out to training.
Player of the match – whole team but J Emmett, C Malone and B Brumpton were men of the match.
