Wyevale Northampton Garden Centre has generously donated a variety of flowering shrubs and plants to assist Caroline Chisholm School in maintaining the grave of their famous namesake.
Born in Wootton, Northampton, Caroline Chisholm was a progressive humanitarian who was best known for her work with female immigrants in Australia, having moved there with her husband, a captain in the East India Company, in 1838. Between 1841 and 1844, Caroline Chisholm assisted 14,000 people to settle in New South Wales, earning her the title, ‘The Emigrants Friend’.
Buried in Billing Road Cemetery, her grave is visited by large numbers of Australian visitors to the area who still recognise her remarkable achievements in social reform throughout the 19th century.
General Manager of Northampton Garden Centre, Lee Whitstone, was only too happy to show his support to this local project by donating all of the plants and shrubs completely free of charge, guaranteeing a fitting floral tribute to Caroline Chisholm all year round.
