Year 7 Boys Rugby

The first game of the season (for half of the squad at CCS) was always going to be an exciting game. 3:15 school finished and the excitement and some nerves built. All players before getting on the bus, seemed ready with big smiles on their faces and all talking about different moves and each others positions.

After a rather long journey over to Moulton (due to the Bus getting lost), a very prepared team were set out to win, even from the warm up all the players knew their job for the game. The game was the 1st game of the season for both teams, both had a point to prove and a desire to win, this was apparent for CCS all the way through.

The game started with R. Sohal taking the ball in to contact immediately gaining yards driving Moulton towards their try line. Forwards rucking over and allowing C. McColgan to deliver perfect ball to the backs.

After a further impressive display of Rucking over from F. Penuela Traub and C. Bayliss early on, CCS were invading territory and playing all of the rugby. work from the backs and H. Esonseed running round on a looping ball saw CCS close Excellent to scoring.

Unfortunately in a Ruck the ball came out of the side, Moulton picked up the ball running wide into space and scoring in the corner – although a great attempt by R. Holmes and L. Johnston teamed together to put him into touch wasn’t quite enough.

C.Burgess restarted the play with a darting run through the Moulton defence stepping and brushing off a few players before recycling the ball in a very strong position near the try line.

Runs from O.Newsham and H. Hameed kept Moulton pressed against their try line CCS had to be Patient to score. Retaining the balls at breakdowns was impressive by all especially O. Newsham.

Very well executed lineouts by the forwards thrown in by C. Pagano finding a CCS player every time. This set up a platform for the backs to attempt some well practised moves. R.Holmes took a very good line and broke through tackles as they progressed towards scoring with a well executed scissor.

Eventually after being camped on their line for over 5 minutes CCS broke through C.Burgess continually pressuring and tackling. This allowed C. McColgan to dart and place the ball down for a very well earned 5 points.

Into half time 5 -5 however CCS looking the dominant side playing all the rugby, shipping the ball wide and exploiting the space.

R. Yaxley and D. Watkins secured the scrum driving the ball over and the referee having to ask us to stop pushing. CCS were overpowering Moulton.

A. Permain made a healthy replacement at Outside centre linking with J. Camplisson running through players and looking to offload out of the tackle.
Playing the ball wide allowed C. Burgess to release R. Holmes who beat 2 players and scored in the corner.

Forwards dominating in all play gave excellent ball for C. McColgan to give to the backs who tried different tactics to break down Moulton further. C. Burgess eventually found a Gap to score putting CCS 15 -5 ahead.

Many positives with the game and all players definitely enjoyed. Things to work on to improve further. Well done and see you all at training.

Thank you to all parents and supporter who came to encourage CCS.

Man of the Match O. Newsham. Due to tackling everything on the pitch and carrying the ball well in hand.
