Developing Parental Partnerships at CCS

Dear Parents,

Since 2004, Caroline Chisholm School has enjoyed making the most of its position at the heart of the Wooldale Centre for Learning and has benefited from many links with the local community. In June 2009, our OFSTED inspection report highly commended the school’s work in developing and promoting an inclusive and cohesive community. We already have a number of parents who volunteer their time and talents in school and have established some strong business partnerships through our Business & Enterprise specialist status. In order to build on our success to date we are now seeking to extend links, specifically with our parent community.

We are keen to encourage parents who would like to help support the learning in school through the range of options listed below. The information will then be collated to form a Parent Community Database on which we can draw upon to enhance and support the educational experiences of all students at CCS.

Examples of the ways in which parents you could offer help:

Supporting learning in the primary phase classes
This would entail supporting children in the classroom in learning activities such as basic skills. You would be in a busy classroom environment in any of our primary phase classes. Time commitment is flexible as it could be anything from ½ hour to a morning or afternoon on a regular basis.

Providing extra adult support on educational visits across the school
Many of our parents have already supported visits to a number of different locations including farms, museums and galleries etc. You would accompany the students during their activities and work alongside the teaching staff.

Specific subject support i.e. particular expertise with any National Curriculum Subject
If you have expertise in a specific aspect of the curriculum you would be more than welcome to share it with the students of all age ranges. For example, we frequently hire experts in the Arts, Writing & Story Telling, to work with the students. Parents who are skilled in a range of crafts or who are musicians for example would be welcomed.

Links to business or work places which could provide learning opportunities for students
This could involve any number of businesses or places of work, including the private and public sector. In the past, we have had offers from film companies and banks as well as health care professionals and the emergency services. It might be, for example, that you could help students learn about friction because you work in an engineering company.

Completing the form below does not hold you to a commitment. It simply means we can contact you when the students would benefit from your help.

If you have any questions, or would like to talk through some possibilities please do not hesitate to contact me. You can also download the form from the school website and e-mail it back to school
