Year 12 were treated to a most enjoyable and informative talk by a team from Wilson Browne LLP, Northampton, recently.
Jenny Laskey, Marketing Partner and Litigation Solicitor, Tom Warrender,Commercial Property Solicitor and Heather Davies, Family Department Executive explained the different routes into a legal career, their different roles and areas of law. The team advised the students just how competitive it is to get into law, providing some statistics on the numbers of applications to universities, the legal contract and training contract. Jenny provided some particularly humorous stories of some of the cases that she had dealt with but also explained the serious nature of her work and the consequences of getting it wrong.
The point was made that you don’t necessarily have to take Law at A level or even degree in order to gain entry to a legal career. A good degree, ie a 1st or 2:1 in a subject that you really enjoy can pave the way to a legal career. It is also possible to start work after A levels, gaining promotion from taking examinations and gaining experience. Above all, Jenny, Tom and Heather explained just how varied and enjoyable a legal career is.
The session was rounded off with a quiz, won by Ben Howard. The round of applause given to Jenny, Tom and Heather reflected how much the students appreciated and enjoyed the talk. As I said to Tom afterwards, the only downside for them is that we’ll definitely invite them back in next year and they’ll have to do it all over again.
