Wednesday 6th of October saw the newly acquainted under 17 sixth form football team combine together for the first time against Moulton School in the county cup first round. The New Year brought an array of new faces into the side, including A Scott into the starting line up at left back. As the players took to the field, the sun peaked through the cloud for the first time and looked set to make it a hot one.
“Skippa” J Bowen got the game underway as Caroline Chisholm prepared to attack uphill into an ever so apparent wind. Literally minutes in ‘CCS’ had a goal kick; keeper S Hughes kicked well to midfield forcing the right back to spoon the ball back to his centre back. J Bowen pressured the centre back forcing the mistake as he scuffed the ball back towards his own goal for J Bowen to pounce, and slot it past the Moulton keeper, 1-0!
Both sides attacking looked progressively stronger, but with the advantage Caroline Chisholm’s way they began to press more and more, with T Hicks rattling the woodwork and their keeper holding firm making some important saves. Half time, 1-0 Caroline Chisholm.
After a brief chat from Mr Smith the second half was back underway with all the advantages, the goal, the wind and the hill. Again, shortly into the half CCS won a corner, giving centre backs F Clark and A Gilmour the chance to push forward to help out the strike force. T Hicks swung the ball to the front post for G Herbert to dummy and J Bowen to head from close range at the front post putting CCS 2 up. With the lead stretched, substitutes were made with the tired legs of L Stewart, M McKenzie and T Hicks making way for H ‘Alex Song’ Davies, P Haynes and T Chaffer.
As CCS adapted to the new formation, Moulton started the fight back with a free kick clipping the cross bar and going over, and a ball played through T Muparutsa and A Gilmour dismissed by the legs of S Hughes. It was now the turn of J Langer to make his way onto the pitch for H Davies.
Minutes later J Bowen was played through by C Malone for his hat trick. The keeper came out and managed to parry it out towards the side line. Up stepped T Chaffer to “Cross” the ball. He chipped it up and volleyed it towards the back post burying it into the top corner, leaving their keeper looking foolish, 3-0!
In this short period of time, J Langer had managed to become injured and left the field to be replaced by M McKenzie, without a touch of the ball and only two minutes on the field of play!
Moulton were now deflated and fatigued, giving J Bowen the chances to rack up his hat trick short from the end, again sliding it past the Moulton goalie, 4-0 CCS, game, set and match!
Caroline Chisholm now progress through to the quarter finals and hope to keep up the good form and fulfil their high expectations of reaching the County Cup final for the 3rd year in a row!
Man of the Match: Captain, J Bowen. He led from the front and worked tirelessly to create a wealth of chances for himself and others. Well done CCS.
