Using Student Laptops in Sixth Form – 2011

Dear Parent

Student Laptops in Sixth Form

We strongly recommend that all Year 12 students bring a laptop to school.  Students will need these for research, to access our VLE (virtual learning environment) and to produce their coursework.

For the last four years we have offered parents and students a subsidised laptop purchase scheme.   However, more students are arriving with their own laptops now.  The market has also changed recently.  Our research suggests that offers on the high street and online provide students and parents with a wide choice of laptops and at a variety of prices that we can no longer beat.  We would suggest taking a look at the Which buying guide available online at:

and reviews:

We are introducing a new offer to help parents and students at CCS:

We will provide every student in year 12 at Caroline Chisholm School with a FREE personal copy of the latest version of Microsoft Office Professional + 2010 – to be distributed at the beginning of term.  The student version of this software retails at £70+ and the version we are providing is an upgrade from this.

So if you are purchasing a new laptop this summer, there is no need to buy the Microsoft Office package with it.  The ICT network team here will also help students to log their laptops on to the school’s wireless system so that they can access all their documents and software as well as our intranet.

We are offering independent advice to parents and students on the types of laptops available on the market in order for purchases to be made for the start of the new term.   Please ring and ask for Barry Jeffery -Network Manager or Julia Harnden – Director of Finance. We will be available during the first week of the summer holidays (week commencing 25th July) and the week following GCSE results on 25th August. We will be happy to speak to parents any time over the summer holiday period but cannot guarantee our availability every day. Please ring school on 01604 669200 or 01604 669208 between 9 am and 3.15pm.

If you have any other questions regarding your child using their laptop in the sixth form or concerns about purchasing the equipment I will be happy to discuss these with you.

Kind regards

Julia Harnden
