The Y10 Rugby squad entered the 7’s tournament slightly under manned (only a squad of 10) due to late pull outs through illness and unavailability, the lack of numbers would ultimately have a negative effect on the squad as fatigue and injury would hamper the squads progress. The squad included: – R Holmes K Hill J Schampier C McColgan C Burgess A Pearmain J Hamilton L Kingdom S Greenwood
CCS were drawn in an initially tough looking group with relatively unknown opposition including Manshead, Wrenn, Magdalen, & Wollaston.
In the first game we started off strongly winning 6 tries to 1, with A Pearmain scoring a hat trick of tries. In the second game against CCS started to hit form with 4 tries from J Hamilton, 2 from R Holmes in the 7-0 defeat of Manshead School. After a short break CCS had a tough encounter against a very physical Magdalen school, where our patience and commitment to playing a wider running style of rugby resulted in a 4 tries to 1 victory (A Pearmain grabbing his second hat trick of the day). The win game at a cost with two players picking up knocks in the physical encounter that would curtail their involvement in the tournament. This unfortunately coincided with the schedule requiring us to play two more games back to back after the Magdalen victory. Despite the tough schedule CCS recorded impressive victories against Wollaston (8-0 – R Holmes scoring a hat trick of tries) & Wrenn (7-0 – Ryan H again scoring a hat trick of tries). This set up a semi final against Sponne School, in a tightly matched game (1-2 at half time) ultimately fatigue kicked in and CCS lost 1-5 in what was the most disappointing performance of the day. Thankfully the team had the 3rd and 4th play off to finish the day on a high, and this is what they did in 4-1 defeat of Wrenn which was more convincing than the score line suggests.
Overall the performance, how the squad conducted themselves and the rugby produced by CCS was outstanding and made it a pleasure for myself to coach them. A tough decision with regards player of the tournament (notable mentions must go to A Pearmain, R Holmes, K Hill & J Hamilton) but as a result of his instrumental attacking & defensive display and playing every minute of the tournament the player of the tournament is awarded to C Burgess.
